quarter horse?
I have been offered a Palomino Quarter Horse, 10 yr old gelding, i have never had a quarter horse before and I am wondering what the good qualities of a quarter horse is. Answeres would be apprecitated =] thanks
Quarter horses are amazing! I raised one from a colt when I was 14, and he was gentle with me every step of the way; even during the "terrible twos" of breaking. What I love about the breed is that soaring sprint!! A quarter horse (if in good shape) can outrun almost any other breed in a short race. (Hence the name - a quarter of a mile is about the span of their stamina.. well, that and those fine hind quarters! 
)They are incredibly sure-footed, willing and can trail ride for hours. Quarter horses tend to be friendly with other animals and people, and are very versatile under saddle. I used mine as both a trail horse and a steeple chaser, and he performed quite well in English, Western and Australian saddles.
As with buying any horse, I think the most important things to check for in the Palomino are the basics. Ride him; see if you like his gaits. If you are looking for a dressage or serious endurance horse, you may want to look elsewhere - because a Quarter horse is neither huge like the warmbloods nor as fit for long, full throttle, unabashed galloping rides as Arabs. Quarters are good for herding, cornering and offering bursts of speed mixed with long, less demanding endurance. They can jog all day. Speaking of, see if his jog/trot/canter are to your liking, especially when considering whether you'll be riding him in mostly English or Western disciplines. Make sure he will pick his feet up for you (and the farrier) and see how well he responds to your cues. Maybe ride him bareback, too. What I learned about quarters working on a breeding farm is that they are quick to break old habits and relearn what you ask of them. (Not quite as quick as Arabs, but they are a close second). Then I'd just say check out his general health and demeanor. See if the two of you "click" under AND out of saddle.
