how many yards do I need?
I am making a TW quilt. The blks are 5-1/2 sq. A TW quilt is 108x72", I want to put 2" saching around ea blk. How much fabric do I buy. The fabric is 45" wide.
I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're asking, but I'll give it a shot. If you make a TWIN size quilt that is approximately 108" x 72", using 5 1/2" finished blocks (the size after you sew the sashing on, not the size they are before sewing them together), and putting 2" finished sashing (again, 2" after they're sewn, not the cut size) between the blocks and in a border around the entire quilt, you will need between 3 1/2 and 4 yards of 42" wide fabric. To be safe, I'd buy 4 yards, maybe even 4 1/2. This is for the sashing ONLY. The material needed for your blocks depends on what kind of blocks you're making. If you're doing just 5 1/2" squares, you need about the same amount of fabric as your sashing - 3 1/2 to 4 yards. You will cut your squares at 6", and your sashing strips at 2 1/2". You'll make a quilt with 10 squares across and 14 squares down, and it will be approximately 77" x 107".
