Can I embroider with my sewing machine?

I want to embroider a simple name onto a apron. Can one embroider with a sewing machine, and if so how? Do I need another part?

Sure you can. It's called free motion embroidery. Takes a little practice, and your first efforts will probably be towards the, uh, casual script style, rather than "elegant writing".

Here's another technique to try, a variation on free motion embroidery:
Set up for free motion embroidery, and write the name with two pencils taped together (which will give you thick and thin lines). Now fill with the mossing stitch here:
