what is the oldest electronic (and mostly stable) operating system?

electronic as in its written in code and saved on a hard disk, floppy, magnetic tape, rather then punch cards.
i was always under the assumption it was good old Unix, but being that i was born in the 90's my idea of legacy software is windows95 (^_^) which i suppose it is but i'm talking WAY back in like the 40's and 50's
if MS in MS stone stands for microsoft i'm gonna have to call you on that one XD since they where founded in the 70's
and if your actually referring to a stone...that isn't electronic (T_T) its mechanical like the Grecian computers...
otherwise do please enlighten my apparent ignorance to the subject.
oh and btw on light switch...EPIC thumbs up to that one (^_^) haha i never though of that. but the data isn't stored on media except your brain witch is chemical...i suppose to an extent electronic

The oldest storable OS is probably an early version of a DOS. (Predecessor of Windows, Unix and Mac.) before that it was a matter of setting switches, reading punch cards or paper tape coded in straight octal binary.

Binary gives the choice of a zero or a 1 (as the actual machine language in a computer still does!) and was usually programmed in octal (base 8) where 3 binary locations were grouped together. (All 3 locations without holes was read as a zero, the right binary with a hole and the other 2 as zeros was 1 and so on until the largest # with all 3 locations being 1's was a 7. (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 is 8 digits, thus the octal designation)

Blocks of octal coding represented numbers, letters and punctuation. They were read into the computer either via an optical interface (light shining through the hole read as 1 and any spot without a hole read as a zero.) or contacts. (Metal or plastic fingers that fell into holes to be read as 1 and when not in a hole read as zero.) This is the same system as used in the old player pianos that used binary encoded paper rolls to play the notes. (Circa 1800's and probably the first quickly programmable "computers"!!)
