I have kept a journal for 5 years. I have already informed people that they may not like some of the stuff they read after I am gone, but that at the time I wrote it, that was what I was feeling.

What is your favorite knitting stitch pattern book?

I don't mean patterns for sweaters or scarves and such, but stitch-patterns. I have had several over the years and currently mine is Field Guide to Knitting by Jackie Powlowski. What's yours?

I have been knitting for a very long time, so most "common" stitches are easy to me. But I have three that are a great source of inspiration to me:
- Lace from the Attic, A Victorian Notebook of Knitted Lace Patterns, by Nancie Wiseman is a great source of lace patterns, some old fashioned, some intriguing, most appealing to me when I want to get into a really "challenging" project.
- Another lace book: Heirloom Knitting, A Shetland Lace Knitter's Pattern and Workbook, by Sharon Miller, with even more lace patterns plus some projects.
- The Harmony Guide to Aran and Fair Isle Knitting: Patterns, Techniques, and Stitches, by Debra Mountford is to me a constant source of inspiration for new patterns. You can figure out what combination of patterns to use on a sweater depending on the number of stitches and learn to make your own graph.
I also have a few other books for stitches that were very useful over the years, but these are the three I use most a this point.

Does anyone have good ideas on how to store a lot of cross stitch books/leaflets and save space?

A binder might be a good idea but I don't want to hole punch anything but I want to have everything together somehow.

I use plastic sheet protectors to keep my charts clean and neat while I am stitching with them, although usually I will make a working copy of the original pattern so I can fold it up to where I am working. When I am done, I store my stitched charts, the cover sheet and if I stitch with a kit, any excess threads, in the page protector in a binder. If I stitch from a leaflet or pattern, the extra threads go back in my stash.

You can use several binders to group charts by category or in chronological order of how you finish them. The sheet protectors keep the charts neat and there's no holes punched in them. Plus you can either use the cover page or take a snapshot to slide in the sheet protector with the chart so you can flip through quickly to find what you are looking for.

For things I haven't worked on yet, I find that a shallow, plastic underbed storage box is a great solution. They're not so deep that I have to dig through them to find what I am looking for, but all my charts and fabrics lie flat and neat and the plastic bins help keep them clean and dust free until i am ready to use them. Plus they slide out of the way nicely under the bed.

If you have a Fastback binding machine or are looking at purchasing a Powis Parker system you might have discovered that Fastback has an entire language of its own. This article will outline some of the most common terms that you may encounter when using this style of binding system. This is just a start but hopefully it will help you to start speaking the language of Fastback.

Art Cloth Cover: A Cotton fabric Fastback Hardcover. This is a bright material ideally suited for art books and professional photography books.

Bindercover: Pre-cut paper covers in a variety of colors. These covers are designed to create a coordinated effect with Powis SuperStrips.

Book Block: The interior sheets of the book without the cover.

Clear Cover: A special plastic material designed to work well with the Fastback binders. Unlike some other plastics, Clear Cover will not melt when binding. It is also compatible with the Foilfast binder, allowing you to add foil printing to transparent covers.

Comp Cover: Powis Parker's kidskin, paper-based and patterned material. Available in Hardcovers and in individual cover sheets for external binding.

Comp Strip: Thermal strip that matches the comp cover material in appearance. Ideally suited for special presentations of tape-bound documents.

Endleaf: (pl.: endleaves) The stiff paper that attaches the book block to the front and back inside covers.

Fastback Binding System: Powis Parker's unique thermal binding system that allows you to make tape bound, perfect-bound and hard cover books one at a time in an office environment.

Foilfast printer: Powis Parker's foil printer, which prints in foil from most office computers.

Foilfast Title Sheet: Adhesive sheets that match Powis Parker's Suede and Comp Hardcovers. Designed to work with let you add foil printing to your books.

Hardcover Guide: Assembly jig used to center and attach a Fastback Hardcover to a book block. It is also used to identify the correct Fastback Hardcover book widths, and to attach Foilfast Title sheets to the covers.
