How can I calculate the width of decorator fabric to use for curtains?

I know they say for sheers to buy sheers that are three times the width of the window, but what about for decorator fabric that is thicker and stiffer? I don't want them too bunched up anyway.

Anything less than double fullness is going to look skimpy - custom fullness is 2.5 times the rod face plus overlap and returns. Your rod needs to be placed 3 to 4 inches beyond the edge of the window on each side or more to allow for stackback (the width of a drapery panel when fully open) and 2 to 4 inches out from the wall. Let's say that your window is 48 inches wide. Adding 3 inches on either side gives you 54 inches plus 3 inches out from the wall gives you 60 inches. If you are doing draperies that open and close (traversing) you need to allow another 4 inches for overlap for a total of 64 inches as your finished width. If you are doing stationary side panels you only need to consider the actual width you want them to cover plus the return (the distance from the rod face to the wall). In either case take your finished width (rod face, return, and overlap if any) any multiply it times 2.5 or 2 minimum. Lets say each panel of a pair of draperies is going to be 36 inches wide with a 3 inch return making the finished width 78 inches. Multiply this by 2 for double fullness and you get 156 inches. Divide this by your fabric width (lets say 54 inches) and you get 2.8. Round up to 3 widths. Each panel will consist of one full width of fabric seamed to a half width.

I need to find a workbook designed to teach an adult who has the education level of an 8th grader.?

I live in Texas and am trying to help a friend whom also suffers from dyslexia, has low self confidence and a poor outlook on learning.

What is this person doing for a living? She could train for a trade that's in demand where you live, and she'd likely end up making more money per year than most college grads do. Things like plumbing, electrician, HVAC, welding are in demand in a lot of the US, and if she is female, the local unions may be able to offer her some "scholarships" or equivalent to help her train via their union.

As for the rest - there are literacy agencies in Texas. Check the resources available via your local library system, and your local adult ed system. Know that people with severe dyslexia can find it really, really hard to do well in things like reading without extensive, experienced, professional LD support. It's not that she can't learn - she absolutely can - but she needs to be shown how to work with her learning disability, and that often requires a pro.

But that doesn't mean that she can't learn, and that she couldn't do very well in a career where reading wasn't the be-all, end-all of the job. So maybe a focus on a trade or similar, plus some work to improve her reading somewhat, could get her where she wants to go in life.
